Getting Started
Everything you need to join a Freedom Messenger server and start chatting with your team.
What You Need
- An invite link from your server administrator
- A device with a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) — or one of the native apps
- An authenticator app for two-factor authentication (Google Authenticator, Authy, or any TOTP app) — only if your admin has enabled mandatory 2FA
Creating Your Account
Open the invite link
Your admin will send you a link that looks like https://your-server.com/join?token=.... Open it in your browser.
Choose a username and display name
Pick a unique username (lowercase letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens) — this is your permanent identifier. You also need to set a display name — this is what other people will see in chats and user lists.
Create a passphrase
Choose a strong passphrase. The minimum length is set by your admin (at least 6 characters). A longer passphrase is more secure — consider using a sentence you can remember.
Set up two-factor authentication (if required)
If your admin has enabled mandatory 2FA, you will be asked to set it up during registration. Scan the QR code with your authenticator app, then enter the 6-digit code to confirm. Save your recovery codes in a safe place — you will need them if you lose access to your authenticator. If 2FA is not required, you can skip this step and enable it later in settings.
Start chatting
You are now in the messenger. You will see your chats on the left and messages on the right. Your admin may have already added you to some group chats.
Logging In
Visit your server's address in a browser (or open the app) and enter your username and passphrase. If 2FA is enabled on your account, you will also need to enter a 6-digit code from your authenticator. Sessions last 30 days before you need to log in again.
Installing an App
While Freedom Messenger works in any browser, you can also install a native app for a better experience. See Apps & Platforms for details on Android, desktop, and browser PWA options.
